Event Details
In a time when there is mass uncertainty and miseducation about climate change and what is happening to our natural environment, it is easy to feel powerless and lack a sense of agency. However, there is hope in the fact that we are all human beings, and most human beings have emotions and want to see others survive. Despite controversy, it is humans who make laws, and it is humans who have caused the destruction of our planet. But it is also humans who are capable of mitigating the damage...
As poets, we have the power to help evoke feelings of empathy and increase the incentives for actionable change. There is power in storytelling and power in representation.
This workshop will help poets navigate climate anxiety and use their work as an instrument of change in the environmental movement. With a BS in Environmental Science and a BA in Sustainability Studies, Ayanna Johnson will guide poets in using accurate statistics, data, and concepts to inform their work surrounding this topic. Storytelling leads to empathy; empathy leads to justice!
During a time when environmental efforts are actively being reversed, it is crucial that the people who will be most significantly impacted—particularly people of color and those in low-income communities—are educated enough to eloquently communicate the urgency of the situation. The workshop will also feature a poetry reading by Ayanna Johnson, showcasing her original collection of Environmental Justice spoken word, as well as a share-out of the original works produced during the session.
